On the 24.07.1904 of the Club "Bird friend" the today's Zoo grounds along the historic French Fort systems took over. The Club built a first Bird House and built small animal enclosure. This date is considered as the founding date of the Zoo Landau.

Since 1920, the municipally owned system. The veterinarian Dr. Bernhard Nadeem Zoo Director took over in 1994. During his career, in particular the socialization of various animal species in common enclosures was continued successfully.

Since 01.01.2000, the veterinarian Dr. Jens-Ove Heckel as the Director directs the Landauer Zoo. Since then the conceptual change of the Zoo is according to the World Zoo and Aquarium conservation strategy towards a modern nature and species conservation centre in the foreground. In addition to its function as a place of rest, engages the Zoo Landau in the areas of biodiversity, environmental education and research. Also the modernization and the construction of natural, latest findings and requirements customized, animal facilities is intensively promoted. Aspects of carbon neutrality, energy efficiency and sustainability are this special attention.
